日本の面影是一部剧情片，「雪おんな」「耳なし芳一のはなし」などの怪談話で知られるラフカディオ・ハーン（小泉八雲）。その波乱にとんだ生涯は、明治以降の日本が近代化の過程で見失いつつあった「心の故郷」とは何かを問いかけている。古きよき世界を求めて明治時代をさまよったハーンの心の世界を幻想的に描く。

Lafcadio HEARN visited Japan as a newspaper reporter in 1890. Within the same year, he found a job as an English language teacher at a local town, Matsue. Having experienced many things in the traditional Japanese society, which impressed and attracted him so much, he got married with Fumi, a woman of a poor former samurai class family. With her help, he collects many folklore later fruited in his piece known as \"Kwaidan\". But harsh and rapid changes of the society deprived the magic of his beloved Japanese life, would have made his late years alienated again even surrounded by his family.
